The Creativity and Innovation District at Virginia Tech by Hanbury
Architectural Videographer of the Year, Special Mention, Vision Awards 2023

“Architecture is more than a building. Consider people, emotions, experiences…

At Hanbury, it’s our role to help tell the story; the story about people—about how design can transform a community. We focus on documenting the big idea along with those moments that are sometimes lost behind the scenes. All our in-house videographers have professional degrees in architecture and have roots in the profession.

We utilize filmmaking as a tool for client storytelling, internal documentation, and to innovate and establish new standards in the architecture field. Videography has become part of our culture at Hanbury, never an add-on. We’ve learned that videography is another communication tool and a way to bridge the gap between our profession and the public by decrypting architecture-speak. As architects and designers, we must be community builders.

We firmly believe that to improve the cities in which we work, we must include the residents in the design process; it’s the first step. Community activation comes before construction. We utilize short films to reach out to the community for fundraising with projects like “Dream Center” or “Kappa Park” or to build hype and buzz around a project soon to be constructed like “Atlantic Park.” With “CID,” we focus on the people–the staff and students whose lives were transformed by the opportunities of a new place. With films like these, we’re reminded why we became architects at the start, to catalyze growth and positive change. Too many little moments and client interactions are lost along the way, and our mission is to shine a spotlight on the design process in its entirety. We find the spark behind the project and simply place that in front of the lens.”

Located alongside NHS hospitals across the UK, Maggie’s provides a ‘home away from home’ – a refuge for emotional and practical support. Inspired by Maggie Keswick Jencks, they place great value upon the power of architecture to lift the spirits and help the process of therapy. In 2016, Foster + Partners completed a new Maggie’s centre in Manchester. Located close to The Christie Hospital and its leading oncology unit, the centre offers a place where visitors can be supported from diagnosis to recovery.

Maggie’s Manchester has provided people living with cancer with a therapeutic space for healing and free access to practical, emotional, and social support that might not otherwise be available. The film shows Foster + Partners revisiting the centre in 2022, to speak to some of the staff and visitors who use the space and understand the role it has come to play in their lives.

“MAKING RIVER CITY” tells the story of a contaminated, flood-prone, industrial zone forked by two highways, in a semi-abandoned area of Toronto…and its eventual transformation into an iconic gateway that ushers you into one of the premiere cities in the world.

River City was never meant to be just a series of residential buildings, it was envisioned as a community, a unique environment for Torontonians. A rare coup of this project was having the public and private sectors working in unison in the residential space.

In the end, “MAKING RIVER CITY” proves a new standard for what a private developer can do to contribute to the public realm while being design progressive and contribute towards the community. In turn, River City has become the gateway that Toronto always deserved and few thought it would ever have.

The film presents a speculative scenario where coproduction is imagined as a guiding philosophy in the development of the site.

Spanning a period from 1965 to 2100, the proposition questions how a landscape can by passively designed to respond to the site’s heat, humidity, salt, tides and bird excrement – often “unwanted”, unproductive elements that architecture tends to insulate from. \

By closely looking at how these unproductive elements, it reveals that notions of ruination often take on human-centric perspectives. In designing for the site as a coproducer of architecture, alternative typologies and construction techniques are proposed in the form of a Coccolith Well, Weathering Perch and a Sunken Reef.

These interventions are co-produced by humans, architecture and non-human actants to form more land mass, a tourist destination and an ecologically rich site; all while asserting sovereignty of the state without the need for overdevelopment and the maximisation of territorial space.

After government testing (located in Area 51) went wrong due to the lead scientist’s own objectives, a mass pandemic arises where the Nevada Test Site is the only sterile site due to its highly restricted nature.

The scientist is incarcerated but to save face, the scientist, otherwise known as subject #002, is recruited to take part in a government experiment of a domicile to protect against all things apocalyptic. Subject #002 is brainwashed into thinking that the historical faux towns populated by mannequins are actually real, however in ‘Nuke Town’, population is 1. Birds to the subject are drones, people; mannequins…

Once the historical 20th century nuclear bomb trials took place, government afflicted architects learn from the previous trials and incorporate remnants of the 1960s American Home. The byproduct, an atypical American home reassembled due to the atomic bombs destruction.

When approaching any of the twenty-three Teletón Children’s Rehabilitation Centers (CRITs), designed by Sordo Madaleno since 1999 and located in different cities across Mexico, their presence is immediately recognizable.

A common language with its own identity defines this network of architectural complexes, which aim to create a peaceful and appealing environment for children’s rehabilitation. They draw inspiration from local symbols, incorporating their morphology into the design. Playful forms, geometrical patterns in vibrant colors, well-placed openings for natural lighting, and facades that showcase changing perspectives define their design elements.
